Stockport Local Heritage Library is part of Stockport Central Library and is situated on the upper floor of the Central Library, accessible by both stairs and public lift. It provides a wealth of information for researchers into the history of the area, for those who have a general interest in the past and those investigating their family history.
We collect and preserve material that relates to the history of Stockport. This includes records relating to the former Urban District Councils of Reddish and Heaton Norris which were amalgamated with Stockport County Borough in 1901 and 1911 respectively, and, also the former Urban District Councils of Bredbury & Romiley, Cheadle & Gatley, Hazel Grove & Bramhall and Marple which were amalgamated with Stockport County Borough in 1974 to form Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council.
All items are for consultation only within the department and cannot be borrowed. As we are operating within a restricted space only a small selection of our holdings is on open access. The Local Heritage Library staff expect to be approached in order to answer enquiries relating to the material which we hold - please ask, you can consult our catalogues and items will be brought out for you. If you are travelling some distance, please contact us beforehand as some of our collection is stored offsite.
It is possible to photocopy from most items (subject to condition and current copyright restrictions). All photocopying is carried out by staff and you will be required to complete a photocopy declaration form should you require copies. A small charge is payable.
The library has microfilm and microfiche machines. These are available to the public at no charge. A booking system is in operation and it is recommended that you book a microfilm reader in advance of your visit as they are in heavy demand. Machines can be booked for a maximum of four hours.
The library offers a fiche/film copying service for a small charge. Please allow 2 days for printout requests to be processed, printouts can be collected or posted. If a large order is being placed, a deposit may be required.
