Details of boundary changes
There are separate records for local authorities in the libraries index, but it is important to realise that information about places might be held by other local authorities. There are several reasons for this, but the most likely is due to boundary changes. The boundaries of many local authorities changed in 1974, and again in 1996. Some new local authorities were created - these may hold information for the local authority the used to be part of. For instance Kingston upon Hull is now a separate authority, but will have holdings for East Riding of Yorkshire, and vice versa. You can use the following maps to check if the place you are researching used to be part of a different authority, or you can search for the placename and see which other authorities have holdings.
