A comprehensive census of population recording names, occupation, ages, birthplaces etc. was taken every 10 years from 1841 to the present. Every one present in a parish is listed wherever they happened to be on census night, including women, children, servants, visitors, lodgers, those in institutions, pedler's , tramps, sailors on ships etc.).
